Our primary focus will be on the novel. We will read a variety of novels, as well as short stories, and plays. Students will complete written responses and essays over the material that they will read. We will work on our grammar and usage skills by using the online program No Red Ink. Students are expected to earn ten AR points each quarter.
1st quarter: Romeo and Juliet and The Outsiders; Literature Focus - drama; Big Question - Does fate or choice control our lives?
2nd quarter: The Odyssey, the Hero's Journey novel project; Literature Focus - poetry; Big Question - What makes someone a hero?
3rd quarter: The Lord of the Flies and short stories; Literature Focus - short story; Big Question - What is the nature of humanity?
4th quarter: Fahrenheit 451, Uglies; Literature Focus - the novel; Big Question - How does our society impact its citizens?
