This is a ZCS kindergartner’s-eye view of what some of our favorite locals do for a living. After prepping and conducting interviews, this is what we came away with:
NURSE LAURIE (KCH): “Nurse Laurie takes care of patients. She is a nurse at Kingman Community Hospital. She warned us to never touch old needles. She takes blood pressures. When patients push the red button, the light lights up and a nurse will come. Laurie is very nice!”
MARY HELLMAN (Postal Worker): “Mrs. Hellman puts her stamps and money in a safe. She works in a post office. She sorts a lot of mail, and she is good at it. You can’t bring a gun into a post office. The canceling stamp said “Zenda, KS” and “May 13, 2008.” She also has a box of bears to sell. They are cute!”
LORENE DEVRIES (Teacher): “Mrs. DeVries went to school to take classes. She gets new ideas for every day from her books. She writes a list of stuff for her classroom, and Mr. Ormiston orders it. Mrs. Oeding showed her how to use a copier. It makes her happy to teach kids.”
MELVIN ORMISTON (Principal/Superintendent): “When Mr. Ormiston was a third grader, his dad taught him to drive on a tractor. He is a principal and superintendent. He lives in Cunningham by the school. He hires teachers from colleges. His favorite part is watching students succeed. He enjoys it!”
Many thanks to our interviewees. You helped us get a better perspective on what is really involved in selecting a career. By the way, Carl would like to become a fireman like his poppie. Dalton loves planes, and wants to be a pilot. Mekhi likes to help people, and would like to be a police officer. Amaya loves pretty things, and she wants to work in a store. Mrs. Swingle wants to be a teacher when she grows up!
